As we descended the stairs from the second floor, I stopped on the small landing and touched Landon’s muscular arm. I could feel the warmth of his skin through the worn fabric of his plaid shirt.

“Remember when I said I wanted to wait before you moved in?” I asked.

Landon paused, one foot on the step below, and turned to face me. The fading sunlight filtering through the circular window at the landing caught on his salt-and-pepper waves, illuminating his rugged, thoughtful face. “Sure, I recall that conversation,” he said after a moment, his brow furrowing. His bright blue eyes studied me with a hint of curiosity. “I believe it was just last night, so hard to forget in that short of time.”

“Well, I’ve been thinking more about it, and I’ve changed my mind,” I told him, running my hands over the smooth wooden railing. “I was wondering if maybe you’d like to stay over with me tonight?”

As soon as the question left my lips, I felt a nervous flutter in my stomach.

Landon regarded me. “This change of heart wouldn’t have anything to do with that spooky Ouija board session putting you on edge, would it?”

I looked down. I wanted to say no. I really did.

I wanted to tell him I thought about it and realized I was being silly, and that’s the only thing I thought about.

But I also didn’t want to start this off with a lie.

Landon placed a hand under my chin, guiding my eyes back to his. “It’s okay if it did unsettle you some,” he said, his voice reassuring. “I didn’t like it much myself, and I know how seriously you’ve been taking this investigation into Luna’s passing. I have no problem with the fact that you’d like to have a friendly face around tonight. And tomorrow. And maybe the day after that.”

I reached out and took his rough, calloused hands in mine. They engulfed my own. “It’s not just that,” I said.

“No?”

“The truth is, I’m keeping barriers up between us for no good reason. Evie and I are adults—she loves you, and I doubt she’d have an issue with it. I have no doubt you and I can handle sharing space. My choice to delay is really about making you pay for mistakes I made in my past with other relationships, and it’s not fair.” I looked down. “And, yes, okay, maybe that bizarre Ouija encounter did freak me out a little. Having you around would make me feel less nervous.”

Landon regarded me for a long moment, his piercing blue eyes searching my face. Then his expression softened into a crinkly-eyed smile.

“Well, in that case, I’d be happy to provide some comfort and protection tonight and any night you wish to have it, ma’am,” he said, giving my hands a gentle, reassuring squeeze. “I’ll take any excuse to fall asleep beside you, Ellie Rockwell—it’s my favorite place to be.”

I smiled back, my nerves dissolving.

As long as I had this steady man by my side, ghosts and ghouls didn’t stand a chance.
